content

Mr. Bozzi is the owner and landlord of many apartments and houses in Brooklyn's immigrant neighborhoods. He is a stubborn upstart who is only oriented towards his own profit and has no sympathy for his tenants, who are often poor and living in need. To prevent beggars knocking or ringing his bell, he has trained himself to make dog sounds. When a fairytale saleswoman appears one day, she curses him into a dog that only a person's love can transform back. Bozzi now experiences, being pushed around, hungry, undesirable, life as merciless and cold. Chased by other dogs, chased away by people with whom he can no longer communicate, he wanders the streets until he meets the boy Tonino, who takes care of him. The two become friends, and when some youngsters beat up little Tonino, he pounces on the thugs to protect Tonino. Through this act of selflessness, Bozzi is transformed back into human form. The inner transformation is permanent: From now on, Bozzi is understanding and friendly.

criticism

"Humorous and accurately staged fairy tale film from our day ... A pure pleasure."

- Film observer, based on: Hahn / Jansen, Stresau: Lexikon des Fantasy-Films, Munich 1985, p. 234.

"An imaginative and punchy comedy with delicious ideas that convincingly combines elements from fairy tales and reality with an unobtrusive but honest message."

Bosley Crowther complained that the film exaggerated a bit in everything: Too obviously staged on feeling, the fantastic transformation was too strenuous.
