The circle was a German avant-garde cultural magazine published monthly from November 1924 to 1933 .

history

The magazine was published by Ludwig Benninghoff (1890–1966) and Wilhelm Postulart . After the seizure of power of the Nazis , the magazine was banned with the Mainummer the year 1933rd

content

The circle had the subtitle "Journal for Artistic Culture". Despite its second subtitle “Organ der Hamburger Bühne”, which ran until 1926, it was always a lively forum for contemporary art , music (including jazz ), literature and architecture . The main contents of the circle included portraits of writers, cultural-philosophical essays, reviews and illustrations of works of art from different epochs.

Authors

Notable contributors included Le Corbusier , Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt , Hans Henny Jahnn , Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann , Peter Hille , Ludwig Klages , Max Beckmann , Hans Leip , Joachim Maass , Max Sauerlandt and Rudolf Alexander Schröder . The last issue, the fifth edition of the 10th volume (1933), contained articles by the writer Reinhold Schneider and by Hanns Johsts , who were close to the Nazis , and Friedrich Sieburgs . Nevertheless, the magazine was banned.

The magazine Der Kreis, which was inspired by the Buddhist artist and writer Anagarika Govinda and founded by Hans-Ulrich Rieker and Wilhelm A. Rink in 1956 , consciously tied in with the title of the magazine published by Benninghoff and Postulat until 1933.
