action

After a robbery, a gang of criminals gathers in a post office to wait for their leader Dan Hogan and his wife Daisy, who has the loot with her. There they meet John Webb, who asks to speak to Hogan. When he arrives a little later, Webb offers himself as a guide to the Mexican border for half of the booty. Since Hogan's wife is late, she is suspected of having made off with the booty; Hogan himself is also accused of plotting against the gang with Webb, which is why he is disarmed by Reed, who then takes over the leadership of the gang. After the arrival of a carriage, whose passengers are taken hostage by the outlaws, Daisy also arrives with the booty, which is why Hogan becomes the leader of the gang again and shoots Reed.

Immediately afterwards, three patrolling rangers, looking for the gang, arrive in the post office and seem to be deceived about their presence at first. Meanwhile, two gang members get into an argument in the stable next door over a killed hostage and kill each other.

The next day, the gang headed for the Mexican border under Webb's leadership. Fearing that they will be followed by rangers, they take two women, including Elanor, who had come by stagecoach, hostage. After a long escape, the rangers are hot on the gang's heels, which is why Webb chases away almost all of the horses in order to lead the rangers on the wrong track. The group now has to walk the rest of the way. When Elanor cannot go any further from exhaustion, Hogan rushes her with his whip through the desert until she falls into quicksand and goes under. When Hogan leaves the others alone to explore, the bandit Greene sees the time has come to run away with the gold, which is why he forces the Webb at his revolver to show him the way. This leads him in a circle so that the group finally returns to the starting point where Hogan waits and shoots Greene.

When Hogan and Webb reach the limit, Hogan refuses to pay the promised share and shoots the last remaining man as a traitor. He discovers that the gold is counterfeit. In the firefight that follows, Webb reveals his identity. His family, who worked with the Northerners after the civil war , were murdered as collaborators by a Ku Klux Klan group led by Hogan . Webb shoots Hogan. He leaves his body to a girl who has been taken hostage by Hogan in order to leave her the bounty. She runs after Webb and asks him to take her with him. Both ride away.

Reviews

The established film critics found hardly any positive words and judged Kinski's performance differently: The lexicon of international film saw a film that “moved within the narrow limits of the spaghetti western genre, was as boring as it was brutal. After all, Klaus Kinski delivers a solid portrayal of villains. ", Corriere della Sera wrote in his review by RB that the director was not gaining any new knowledge from the genre and said:" Slowly and often monotonously, the film unfolds some kitchen psychological ambition, moved but clearly within known and stone-old paths. While Kinski charges until it is unbearable, other actors remain strangely indifferent ”. The film, on the other hand, is highly regarded by fans. The "chamber play-like psycho-western" uses bizarre camera angles and gains in tension and intensity by being limited to a few venues, says Christian Keßler .

Remarks

The actress who plays Daisy is the daughter-in-law of the US director Fred Zinnemann , Anna.
