DER POLAR (born December 7, 1981 in Aachen , real name Stephan Piez ) is a German singer-songwriter and producer .

Life

Stephan Piez grew up near Aachen. At the age of seven he attended a music school , learned to play keyboard and piano and taught himself to compose. Piez and his school band won numerous smaller competitions as a keyboardist. After completing his training at the SAE Cologne and a bachelor's degree at the SAE Berlin in collaboration with Middlesex University in London, he published his thesis in 2007 on the subject of "The Best Agers - A target group in the music market of the future". In the same year Stephan Piez wrote some demos under the pseudonym DER POLAR, which he sent to the Hamburg producer Stani Djukanovic. The label of media entrepreneur Frank Otto , ferryhouse , finally signed the artist in 2010. The debut album Herz + Blut was written, recorded, sung and produced by Stephan Piez himself, except for the last track. Only the radio version of the single "Ich bin bei dir" was produced in collaboration with Roland Spremberg ( A-ha , Reamonn ). The album was released on September 30, 2011.

At the end of 2010, DER POLAR published a provocative video clip entitled Egoshooter , which was blocked a few weeks after it was published on YouTube. In February 2011 Weggewischt was released as the first official single. In September 2011 the second single I am with you was released . The video, in which Cosma Shiva Hagen plays, was number one in the weekly and monthly charts on MTV.de.

As a songwriter, Stephan Piez also writes and produces for other artists such as Annett Louisan , Glasperlenspiel or your youth . With Melbeatz and! Bazz, for example, he produced the single Feuer und Flamme in 2012 from the album MMS , which reached number 40 in the German single charts . For the 6th studio album, the Echo Prize winner Annett Louisan "Too much information", Piez contributed the second single "Particular" in addition to the song "The recipe". The album entered the German album charts at number 3 and stayed in the charts for several months.

criticism

The album Herz + Blut was largely received positively by the critics. laut.de praised the "unaffected, relentless authenticity in the lyrics" and the "musical independence". The women's magazine Petra wrote Heart + blood is "... a spotlessly clean, very clever and fundamentally relaxed small pop masterpiece." . Only the youth magazine Bravo criticized the fact that Herz + Blut inspires with a beautiful electro sound, but that many songs sound "pretty much the same" .

The video platform YouTube blocked the video for the song Egoshooter in 2010, which sparked a minor debate on the Internet. The video can still be seen on other platforms. Frank Otto defended the artist: “Obviously, double standards are being used here. The video for "Egoshooter" speaks a visual language that can serve as a daunting example for many and is far removed from the commercially driven content that is offered, among other things, in the age-protected YouTube area. Trivia

Since Stephan Piez had recorded all the instruments himself, but could not play a guitar in 2011, he had to simulate the guitar parts on Herz + Blut with a keyboard, computer, sampler and digital guitar amplifier. He did this so realistically that his album was praised in one of the most famous German guitar magazines, Guitar & Bass , for its “tasteful guitar spots”.
