The Prince and the Whipping Boy is a German-American-British-French television film from 1995 based on the novel "The Whipping Boy" by Sid Fleischman . The film was shot at Schloss Bürresheim and in France and contains elements from the family film.
action
The film takes place in the fictional feudal kingdom of Bratenberg at the time of the Baroque. The main characters are two boys around ten years old. While Boris is Prince von Bratenberg and heir to the throne, Tommy belongs to the lower class and ekes out his existence as a pied piper. Isolated and neglected by his father, the king, Boris harassed the population out of boredom, and so he and Tommy clash for the first time, but at first he can escape the prince's captors. Boris then repeatedly tries to draw attention to himself by pranks at the expense of the envoy from the neighboring kingdom, who is staying in the kingdom in the course of border negotiations, and thus endangers the kingdom and diplomacy. Tommy, who has been captured in the meantime, is quickly made into the prince's new whipping boy and receives the due flogging sentence for his actions in his presence, to Boris' annoyance without expressions of pain. However, the two boys grow closer after Boris decides to run away from his aloof father and help Tommy find his little sister. She had previously been sentenced to prison for alleged theft. Boris knows where the prison is and Tommy is well versed in the skills of survival beyond pomp and consumption. Both depend on each other. After the liberation has failed, they return to the castle, where the king is currently making war arrangements because the negotiations have failed and his son was supposedly kidnapped by the opposing side. When it arrives, it reveals the truth and the war is avoided. Tommy's sister is rehabilitated and the siblings are given the right to live in the castle.
Subplot strands are the gambling den of the blind Karl, to whom Tommy sells the rats, his renting from a devious landlady and scenes with the prince's head of house, who finally promotes the ambitious Tommy instead of the provocatively unwilling to learn Boris as well as the capture of the two boys during their escape by two Rogue.
German language version
The German dubbing has changed several names: the whipping boy is called Tommy instead of Jemmy, his sister is Annerose instead of Annyrose, the prince is called instead of Horace Boris and the owner of the gambling hall is called Blinder Karl instead of Blind George. The German title is also an alliteration .

Reviews
“A children's film set between fairy tales and social criticism, carried by unobtrusive tension and reserved humor, which conveys its“ messages ”in an entertaining way. Excellent staged and photographed, refreshingly played. "
“This children's film by the young director Syd Macartney is lavishly staged and ties in seamlessly with the stories told by Charles Dickens. The fairy tale about the friendship of two unequal boys with social criticism that cannot be overlooked offers good entertainment without a morally sour aftertaste. "
