action

Baroness Angelika von Degen has a devoted admirer and admirer in Count Saldern. Still, she can't choose to marry him despite his courtship. After they both return home from a sailing trip, Angelika and Saldern have a picnic. Not far from there, Angelika sees the young Ulrich Henrici painting. She quickly developed an interest in the aspiring artist, but he always gave her the cold shoulder, no matter what she did. Angelika decides to take a different path. She strips off the aristocratic demeanor and dresses up as a simple maid. And indeed, Henrici begins to be interested in her, and eventually even proposes to her. But Angelika rejects him - for the time being. When she finally wants to say yes to him, Henrici is no longer there - away.

One day Angelica falls victim to a fire that breaks out during a festival. She survived, but her face was disfigured by burn scars. Henrici has also been hit hard in the meantime, and as a result of an accident he goes blind. After his recovery, Henrici and Angelika marry. Only after many years does the painter regain his sight after an operation. To spare him the sight of her and for fear of his reaction, Angelika flees from his life on the same day, before she knows the result of the operation. Henrici searches for his wife for six years, only then does he manage to track her down. To give her security, Henrici lets Angelika know that the operation had failed and that he is still blind. Under these conditions, Angelika is ready to return.
