Loosened chains is a German silent film drama from 1916 with Henny Porten in the lead role.

action

Lisabeth Blenke is widowed at a young age, her late husband was a wealthy leather dealer and bequeathed a lot to her. Now a new man has entered her life, Count Harro von Trautendorff, to whom she wants to become engaged. Since this is a class-conscious family, they are first introduced to the family council convened by old Prince Ernst, which should decide whether they can be accepted into the circle of the illustrious family.

She is welcomed by almost all Trautendorffs, only one is standing cross: Harro's cousin Joachim. Because he knows of a rather dark spot in Lisabeth's vita. He once represented her as a prosecutor when Lisabeth was sentenced to prison for theft. The accused denies the charge, and Harro, jumping aside, demands that his cousin provide solid evidence to support his allegation or satisfaction. But Lisabeth wants to fight for her love for Harro and tries to gain Hans Joachim's trust. He finds his allegation confirmed, whereupon Lisabeth confesses ruefully.

But she asks him to be silent. So Joachim suddenly appears as a slanderer. The indignant Harro then blackens his cousin in the common frequented club, whereupon Joachim, socially ostracized, is cut and avoided by everyone. Joachim stands by his word not to expose Lisabeth and finally wants to give up his professional position. In order to let the grass grow over the matter, he plans to travel. Lisabeth only now realizes what she has asked of her future brother-in-law, thanks him for his honesty and decides to tell the truth. Harro is deeply shocked and immediately breaks off the engagement with her. After all, it is Lisabeth and Joachim who find each other and finally get engaged.
