Trausti, an Icelander who was raised as a Christian in Norway and studied theology, returned to Iceland in 1077. He gets into a family feud over a stranded whale, in which his mother - the head of the family - is killed by Eirikur, the clan head of the other family. Thereupon Grímur, a servant of Traustis, sets Eirik's house on fire and kills him with it. Eirik's place as head of the clan is taken by his daughter Isold.
Trausti and Isold are drawn to each other, but Isold has already been promised Hjoerleifur to bring peace back to the region. Hjoerleifur is the son of the Bishop of Iceland, corrupt and greedy for power. Isold would be ready to agree to the marriage against her inner conflicts, were it not for her affection for Trausti. She follows her heart and at the same time apparently enters into the marriage with Hjoerleifur. This double game inevitably ends in tragedy.
background
After the success of Hrafninn flýgur , Hrafn shot The Shadow of the Raven as its sequel . While The Flight of the Raven takes place at the beginning of the time of the conquest of the land (870 to 930 AD), the plot of The Shadow of the Raven takes place in the time of Christianization (from 1000 AD) during the saga period .
Like its predecessor , the film strives for Icelandic sagas , for example in the motif of the stranded whale, the burning of people and their houses and the survival of such a fire in a whey keg . In addition, the film processes ancient Greek tragedies and borrowings from the Celtic legends about Tristan and Isolde . The 2.5 million euro film was so successful internationally that Hrafn was able to shoot The White Viking (Hvíti víkingurinn, 1991) for around five million euros .
The shadow of the raven , like The Flight of the Raven, was created in the area around Drangshlið near Skógar . Back then, the remote area could only be reached by helicopter and off-road vehicle, which made filming difficult. The film was also shot at Ófærufoss on a natural basalt stone bridge that collapsed in an earthquake a year after the film was finished. The Shadow of the Raven is the first Icelandic film to be made using an anamorphic method .
criticism
The film was very successful internationally, which critics partially attached to the authenticity of the film. With its "authentic equipment, the melancholy Nordic atmosphere and the credible portrayal of 'Germanic' thinking in terms of clans and honor", the film is "historically [...] worth seeing".
"Until the happy ending between the softie Trausti and the grim Isold, Gunnlaugsson demonstrates that he has now learned to deal with the cinema thunder - the delicate tones, and with it real tension, fell by the wayside."
"Slowly laid out for the non-Scandinavian audience, The Shadow of the Raven is gaining momentum in its violent last third."
Honors
At the first presentation of the European Film Awards in 1988, Tinna Gunnlaugsdóttir and Helgi Skúlason were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor (also for Pathfinder ), but not awarded.
