The Tennosee (obsolete Thenner See ) ( Italian Lago di Tenno ) is a mountain lake in the area of the municipality of Tenno in Trentino , Italy in an enclosed basin north of Lake Garda .

It lies at an altitude of 570 meters above sea level, embedded in an almost untouched natural landscape at the foot of Monte Misone . Its special color, ranging from turquoise to sky blue, is remarkable, which is why it is also called Lago Azzurro . The lake has a size of about 0.25 km², but this varies depending on the amount of rainfall. In autumn, heavy rains can cause the lake to rise by 15 meters, which means that the small island on the southeast corner is completely covered with water. This island, which emerged from the lake for the first time in 1986, forms a peninsula in prolonged drought and when the bay behind it dries up.

The tributary is the Rio Secco, while the lake has no direct outflow but feeds the Rio Magnone through seepage water about 30 meters below the lake . In a study, Lago di Tenno was identified as the cleanest freshwater lake in Italy.

The bank cannot be reached by car, only on foot via stone stairs. The shoreline is accessed by several paths that lead around the lake. The lake is surrounded by forest, the shore is natural and the water is crystal clear. In summer it is a popular swimming lake.

Emergence

The lake was created by a landslide from the orographic right side of the valley, which dammed the inflow. Due to the tree trunks of a former forest now covered with water, discovered on the lake bed, it was possible to determine using the radiocarbon method that the lake must have been formed at the beginning of the 12th century. Other lakes in Trentino ( Cei , Canzolino, Levico , Tovel ), dammed up by landslides, date from this period , which indicates an increased seismic activity at that time, which led to an increased number of landslides.

Fish fauna

The following fish species can be found in Lake Tenno: eel , Alburnus arborella (a species from the genus Alburnus ), brown trout , chub , perch , rainbow trout and rudd .

Others

The origin of the lake is linked to a legend. An old settlement is said to have been located on the site of the lake, which, due to its godly inhabitants, disappeared into the water masses that formed the lake in a flood that broke out at noon . The few survivors are said to have built the nearby town of Pranzo (German lunch ) in memory of this event .
