occupation

Der Spalt - Gedankenkontrolle is a German fiction film by Kim Schicklang from 2013, which depicts the isolation and stigmatization of a young transgender woman from the perspective of the person concerned. The film ran in German cinemas from 2014.

action

Alex is a young, transsexual woman who is teased by those around her for being different. Somewhere in a normal high-rise area, where everything looks the same, this 20-year-old Alex lives with her unemployed mother. Not a normal household for women. The mother hopes for a new professional perspective every day. Alex still lives without any prospects due to her gender situation. She is an outsider and is treated like decoration by her social circle. She even disregards her lesbian classmates from her school, because unlike her, she is also without a peer group. Alex detests this learning prison called school, where people like her are by definition not allowed to exist.

One morning, when Alex has to go to school again, she runs into a photo reporter on her way to school. His name is Christian Strange and he really wants to take a photo of what he thinks is a beautiful woman. "Hello! Beautiful woman! ”He calls after her. Alex, who is otherwise so marginalized, is completely overwhelmed by this completely new situation. Who normally perceives her as the person she is? But this is exactly where the story of Alex and Christian begins, who will get to know each other much better in the course of the film. This Christian is also somehow different or rather special, because he is the only person besides Ms. Müller who notices her. Although it doesn't work straight away with Alex from Christian's perspective and is not always that easy, especially not in bed, he stays with her. He wants to help her because he knows such a psychologist. Alex accepts his offer.

background

The Rift is a dystopian drama about a world in which gender standardization has been declared state doctrine. Kim Schicklang's debut film deals with self-discovery, first love and gender diversity in a Kafkaesque environment. A transsexual woman who does not conform to gender norms finds herself in the situation of being declared non-existent. Media in particular play an important role in the “discursive control” of norm-variant people. Both the intro and the outro of the film refer to this exclusionary character. So it says: “Imagine people claiming that you don't exist. Then do you believe the people. Or yourself? ”The shooting took place in 2013 in Stuttgart. The unofficial preview took place in April 2014 at the Stuttgart Media University . Der Spalt was presented to the public for the first time in June 2014 as part of the Stuttgart Film Night at the Cinemaxx in Stuttgart. The premiere took place in July 2014 in the Kino Atelier of the Arsenal cinemas in Tübingen. Since then, Der Gap has been shown both in cinemas and at universities as a contribution to the topic of sexual diversity.

Reviews

The Stuttgart magazine Lift describes the film as a “professionally implemented low-budget project” that gives an authentic insight into the world beyond gender boundaries. The film is a reminder of the “superficiality of our gender stereotypes”.

“And then, wham !, the best soundtrack I've heard since DRIVE (2011) kicks in and haunted, throbbing synths set the beat for the stunning New Wave intro with a red, blue, and yellow background. Nothing can go wrong now ... "

- QUEERmdb

“The (unusual) philosophical thriller drama Der Spalt deals with ideological questions and cites works by various thinkers: Wittgenstein, Markuse, Fromm, Sartre, Foucault and Hannah Arendt. At the same time, the independently produced film shows Stuttgart as uncharted territory on the screen: aesthetic, shaped by brutal concrete and remote nature - simply extraordinary. "
