It was first broadcast on October 24, 1991 on FOX in the United States, and was first broadcast in Germany on January 11, 1993 on ZDF . Jackie Mason won the Emmy in the Voice-Over Performance category at the 1992 Primetime Emmy Awards for his speaking role as Hyman Krustofski .

action

Krusty the clown keeps an old promise and visits the Simpson family for dinner. When the guest is asked to say the prayer of thanks, Krusty grants a Jewish blessing . When asked about his background, Krusty says that his father, Hyman Krustofski , who is a rabbi , rejected him because he rejected his son's clown career.

Bart and Lisa locate Krusty's father and try to change his mind by referring to passages from the Talmud and the Bible ( Ex 20.12  [1] ) ( Jos 1.8  [2] ). Ultimately, the decisive factor is a quote from the autobiography of Sammy Davis Jr. Yes, I Can (1965). Rabbi Krustofsky appears during a live broadcast of his son, and at the end of the episode, Krusty sings with his father “ O my Papa ”, a song of praise to a circus clown.

background

Jackie Mason won an Emmy for speaking on that episode

The plot is an allusion to the film Der Jazzsänger (1927) , in which a Jewish singer's jazz career leads to a break with his father. Krustofski's complaint "... if he were at least a jazz singer" alludes to the film.

The character Hyman Krustofski was incorporated into the series as a recurring supporting role after the episode's success. At the beginning of the 26th season the rabbi dies.

Jackie Mason guest starred the role of Hyman Krustofski in eight episodes. In the remaining episodes the rabbi was spoken by Dan Castellaneta . He was spoken by Donald Arthur in the German dubbed version of The Father of a Clown , and Ivar Combrinck and Michael Rüth in later episodes .
