The wolf (original title: Varg Veum ) is a Norwegian crime television series about the private detective Varg Veum. It is based on the eponymous series of novels by Norwegian author Gunnar Staalesen .

Varg (Norwegian: "Wolf") Veum, played by Trond Espen Seim , is a private detective in the Norwegian port city of Bergen . A former social worker, divorced and alcoholic, he is characterized as solitary and gruff. Convinced of the wickedness of the world, he sometimes crosses the boundaries of legality in solving the often violent cases. His portrayal is influenced by the fictional character Philip Marlowe by the American novelist Raymond Chandler . Each episode tells its own story. Veum's assignments always overlap with the investigations of Police Commissioner Jacob Hamre, played by Bjørn Floberg .

The filming of the first season was announced in 2006 by the production companies SF Norge from Norway and Miso Film from Denmark. Cooperation partners were the TV stations TV 2 (Norway), ARD (via the production company Degeto Film , Germany), TV 4 (Sweden), Canal + Scandinavia and Yle (Finland). The budget of the first season was 10.5 million euros, the project was supported by the Norwegian Film Fund (Norsk Filmfond). The first and fourth episodes as well as the entire second season were released as feature films in Norway. In Germany, it was first broadcast on public television on Das Erste (Season 1) and on ZDF (Season 2).
