The Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus peptidase 1 (Der p 1) is an enzyme from the group of cysteine proteases and is produced by the European house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus . It is one of the major house dust allergens of the people , as well as its homologues Der f 1 from the American house dust mite Dermatophagoides farinae and Eur m 1 out of Mayne-dust mite Euroglyphus maynei .

properties

As a cysteine protease, p 1 has the amino acid cysteine in its active center . It is an endopeptidase and preferentially hydrolyzes peptides with a hydrophobic or basic amino acid at position P2. The p 1 is glycosylated . The p 1 is formed in the digestive tract, the release of Der p 1 occurs in the feces . In house dust allergy sufferers, antibodies of the immunoglobulin E type are formed against, among others, Der p 1 and Der p 2 , which are used for diagnosis . Over 40% of those allergic to house dust with a proven reaction to extracts of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus have IgE against Der p 1. The p 1 is involved in the development of atopic dermatitis .

history

The p 1 was the first house dust allergen to be described in 1980 by Martin D. Chapman and Thomas Platts-Mills. In the following years it was identified as a cysteine protease, with enzyme activity similar to that of actinidin and papain . In the 1990s, the allergenic activity was attributed to the protease activity.
