Spread wings bug

Derephysia foliacea is a bug from the family of net bugs (Tingidae).

features

The bugs are 2.8 to 3.8 millimeters long. Their network has only a single row of long cells along the edge of the hemielytres , some of which can be divided. The outer edge of the hemielytres is greatly increased. The animals are colored pale brown, the antennae , the head and the central part of the pronotum are darker. The adults are mostly fully winged (macropter).

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed throughout Europe, with the exception of the far north, east to China and Japan. It is also found in the Canary Islands and North America. It is widespread in Central Europe, but is rare everywhere. It is widespread in the UK but only occurs locally. Dry and warm to moderately moist, open habitats and dry, open forests are settled.

Way of life

The animals live on the ground. It is the type of net bug in Central Europe where the diet is most unclear. Putative host plants include mosses, Labiatae (Lamiaceae), such as thyme ( Thymus ) and sage ( Salvia ), Boraginaceae (Boraginaceae), such as snake heads ( Echium ), Compositae (Asteraceae) such as daisies ( leucanthemum ), hawkweed ( Hieracium ) and Artemisia and grasses (Poaceae) such as Wire Schmiele ( Deschampsia flexuosa ). Common ivy ( Hedera helix ) is also mentioned , although it is unclear whether this only serves as a resting place for the flying adults. Nymphs are rarely found, so it is believed that they could live underground and suckle on plant roots. They were only found in moss ( Climatium ) when the nymphs were observed . A relationship with ants is excluded, although such is suspected in Derephysia cristata .

The males of the very active flying bugs swarm especially in May and June during the mating season. From July, the newly hatched adults of the new generation fly. The wintering takes place in the litter . One generation is trained every year.
