The Deriner Dam on the Çoruh River in northeast Turkey , near the border with Georgia , is an arch dam that is used to generate electricity and protect against floods . It is located five kilometers south of the provincial capital Artvin . The reservoir is around 70 km long and has a water surface of 26.4 km² when it is fully flooded.
Dam wall
The dam , a double-curved arch dam, is the highest dam in Turkey and one of the 10 highest in the world. Its height is given as 249 m above the foundation level .
The hydropower plant is to cover a large part of Turkey's energy needs in the future. The four Francis turbines generate with an output of 4 × 167.5 = 670 MW per year. When the reservoir is flooded, they generate around 2118 gigawatt hours per year. The hydropower plant is located underground in a cavern . 3,200,000 m³ of concrete were required to build the dam. (According to other calculations, it is 3,500,000 m³.) To transport it to the construction site, cable cranes were used that spanned the several hundred meters wide and deep gorge.
The planning of the project lasted from 1988 to 1991, the construction period should be from 1998 to 2006, but was delayed until 2012. The dam has been operational since February 2013.
On the Çoruh there is the Artvin dam upstream and the Borçka dam downstream .
Flood relief system
The dimensions of the flood relief system are:
- Length of the distribution tunnel: 937.14 m
- Diameter of the distributor tunnel (outside / inside): 14 m / 11.6 m
- Capacity of the distributor tunnel: 1,804 m³ / s
- Flood relief: 2 overflows with 2,250 m³ / s, 8 outlets with 7,000 m³ / s (together 9,250 m³ / s)
- Tunnel lengths for flood relief: Tunnel I: 420.86 m, Tunnel II: 446.60 m
- Diameter of the tunnel: 8 m
