Detlef Rost

Detlef H. Rost (born March 6, 1945 in Olsberg ) is a Marburg psychologist who became known primarily through the Marburg Gifted Project (MHP) he initiated .

Life and career

Education

Rost studied pedagogy from 1965 to 1968 at the University of Education in Westphalia-Lippe , Münster , Berlin and Ruhr, and Hamm. In 1968 he passed the first state examination at the PH Ruhr (teaching post for elementary schools) and then studied psychology, educational science and psychopathology at the Universities of Göttingen and Hamburg . In autumn 1973 he passed his diploma in psychology there and received his doctorate in February 1976, also in Hamburg, with a thesis on the talent factor “spatial conception”. From 1974 to 1980 he worked at the then newly founded "Institute for Elementary School Research" (IfG) of the Nuremberg Faculty of Education at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he set up the research program.

Teaching

In 1980 he was a substitute professor for psychology at the University of Augsburg, in 1981 he became professor for psychology at the Department of Psychology at the Philipps University of Marburg , where he still teaches and researches today. Since 1995 he has been professor of educational psychology and developmental psychology at the Philipps University of Marburg. He headed the relevant work unit until 2010 and retired in March 2010. Since then he has been visiting professor at the Department of Psychology at Philipps University in the Child and Adolescent Psychology Group. In 2007/2008 he was a fellow at the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg / Hanse Institute for Advanced Study in Delmenhorst.

Teaching abroad

In 1989, Rost stayed as a visiting professor for research stays in Argentina (Universidad Nacional de Lomas de Zamora and Universidad Nacional de La Plata ). Further stays in La Plata followed in 1991 and 1996, and a guest professorship there again in 2006. In 1995 he taught at the Yanka-Kupala State University in Grodno ( Belarus ); In 1996 a stay at the M. Tank State Pedagogical University in Minsk (Belarus) followed. He has also been to the Technical University of Kaunas (Lithuania) several times for research . From 2013 to 2019 inclusive, he was a visiting professor at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Southwest China in Chongqing (PR China). Since 2020 he has been a "full" professor there for three years.

Research priorities

In 1987, Rost started a longitudinal project on the gifted (“ Marburg gifted project ”), which a few years later was expanded to include highly talented people . It doesn't stop there. In 1999, Rost conceived and founded together with SR Schilling (today SR Buch) the "gifted diagnostic advice center BRAIN ", a contact point for gifted diagnostics and advice for gifted people, which he still manages today. In 1987 he founded the magazine for educational psychology with A. Knapp , which he co-edited. As editor, he initiated and oversees the research-oriented book series “Pedagogical Psychology and Developmental Psychology” (Waxmann-Verlag Münster), which has now comprised 100 volumes.

In Marburg, Rost together with Lothar Tent u. a. the application focus “Educational Psychology” and later the curriculum “Child and Adolescent Psychology” with Arnold Lohaus.

Rost initiated the institute report series "Reports and work from the Institute for Elementary School Research" in Nuremberg. With Peter Grunow and Doris Oechsle he edited the reader “Pedagogical Behavior Modification” in 1975. In 2009 his book "Intelligence: Facts and Myths" was published, in 2013 his comprehensive "Handbook of Intelligence". His “Concise Dictionary of Pedagogical Psychology”, first published in 1998 and published in its fourth edition in 2010, is considered the standard work for the subject of “Pedagogical Psychology” in German-speaking countries. The 5th edition was published in 2018 together with JR Sparfeldt (Saarland University) and SR Buch (Wuppertal University).
