The DeuKische Generation e. V. is an advocacy group for young people of Turkish origin in Berlin , which was founded in 2007 by young people themselves, with the aim of "establishing a social institution within the shortest possible time that primarily improves the integration of people of Turkish origin in Berlin".

Among other things , she drew attention to herself through her participation in the integration summit of the federal government in 2007 and reporting from international media.

Emergence

The term "DeuKisch"

The term "DeuKisch" occurring in the club name is an occassionalism that arose from the contraction of the words "German" and "Turkish". It is intended to symbolize the growing together of two cultures in a modern German-Turkish youth culture. The reference work From Aldianer to Zauselquote: New German words, where they come from and what we need them for (2007) names Aylin Selçuk and Lamia Özal as the “inventors” of the word. In addition to the first meaning mentioned, the term of this publication denotes an “identity (...) in both countries and cultures (Germany and Turkey)” and is a “commitment to integration”. According to the club's website, the word creation goes back to the members of the club themselves. However, an identical term has already been used in a few linguistic publications as a designation for a mixed linguistic form.

Beginnings

The main initiator and chairwoman of the association was Aylin Selçuk, who was eighteen years old at the time and who had become aware of the problems of high school students of Turkish origin in Berlin through research for a specialist thesis. The realization that “the pupils (suffer) incredibly from their image” and experience criticism that “a child psyche (...) cannot deal with” was the reason for the foundation of the association with the primary aim of “something against the wrong ideas about (...) young people of Turkish origin ”should be made. Selçuk found the first interested parties for membership via a student Internet forum. In July 2007 the association already had 160 members, including honorary member Yıldıray Baştürk . Membership in the association is possible from the age of 16 years.

Club goals

On the one hand, it is important for the young people to make it known in general that “the majority of Turkish young people are already well integrated into German society”, and on the other hand, they want “the young people (...) who still have difficulties with it (... ) Give support and also help their parents ”. With club activities such as advertising spots (“Integration is bilateral”) or a major trade fair for youth leisure and club offers planned for 2008 in Berlin, the club's motto is “Future. Together. Now! ”The image of the young people of Turkish origin“ in the German media and also in German society ”can be improved as quickly as possible. A parent guide project aims to enable parents to better participate in the educational process of their children.

Cooperation with politics

At the second national integration summit in July 2007, Zeynep Balazümbül presented the association as the only invited representative of the youth, the results of a youth integration summit held in May 2007. Threatening the summit with a boycott or staying away, as other associations did in protest against the immigration reform, was out of the question for Balazümbül. In addition, the association took part in the 3rd forum “Germany for Children” in 2007, where Selçuk and another representative, along with the singer Muhabbet and others, participated in a discussion on the subject of “We are Germany too! - Equal Opportunities for Migrant Children ”with Wolfgang Schäuble , which was broadcast on public television. Representatives of the association took part in political discussion programs on television several times. As part of a future project “Future” funded by the European Commission , the association was also involved in a “youth parliament” that met in 2008 in the Berlin House of Representatives .

Media presence

Since it was founded, the association has had an unusually large and sustained media presence in view of its relatively small number of members. He had cover stories in Turkish and German periodicals (e.g. the news magazine Der Spiegel ). The association also reported beyond the Turkish and German-speaking media. For example, the English The Economist named the association's founder in April 2008, possibly a future “first German Chancellor with a Turkish name”.

supporter

The first sponsors of the association were Turkish parents, but also teachers and headmasters of the Neukölln Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium . In the meantime, institutions such as the local Turkish-German employers' association , which provides the premises, or State Minister Maria Böhmer , who offered the association patronage in May 2007 , are among the supporters of the German generation. In 2008, the actress Hannelore Elsner was the godmother of the club chairman in connection with an award and another award nomination by Bild der Frau.

Award

In 2008, Selçuk, the founder and chairwoman of the association, was given the award “Goldene Bild der Frau” by the magazine Bild der Frau along with four other “everyday heroines”. a. resulted in a nationwide large-scale billposting of the respective winners - for this the photographer GABO had made individual portraits of the winners (including Sabriye Tenberken ).
