The Deutsche Bank Building or 130 Liberty Street was a skyscraper in Manhattan , New York City .
It was located between Albany Street and Liberty Street across from the World Trade Center . The 158 meter high building was designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon architects , best known for the Empire State Building , and opened in 1974 as the Bankers Trust Plaza . In 1998 Deutsche Bank acquired it . It was so badly damaged by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 that it was decided to demolish it. In 2011 the demolition was completed.
September 11, 2001 and its consequences
The collapse of the southern tower of the World Trade Center opposite during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 destroyed parts of the facade over 24 floors and the entire interior of the building. Several smaller fires could be extinguished. In the following months, the facade was spanned with a net and repair work began, which was abandoned due to the extent of the destruction.
In September 2005 human remains were found on the roof, and in March 2006 construction workers who were removing toxic waste from the building also found several pieces of bone. This prompted relatives of the victims to continue searching for human remains in collaboration with forensic experts . Between April 7 and April 14 of the same year, more than 300 human bone fragments were discovered in the gravel of the roof.
After a long insurance dispute, the building was finally demolished in phases. This work was completed in January 2011. This makes it the second tallest demolished building in New York after the Singer Building .
During the demolition phase, there was a major fire on August 18, 2007 on the 17th floor of the building, which killed two firefighters.
future
In place of the Deutsche Bank Building , the new headquarters of the JPMorgan Chase Group, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, was to be the 226 m high 130 Liberty Street . The project has not yet been implemented, as JPMorgan Chase took over Bear Stearns Headquarters , 383 Madison Avenue , in the wake of the financial crisis in 2007 .
The American headquarters of Deutsche Bank has been in the 60 Wall Street building since the 2001 terrorist attacks .
