German Candidates Tournament

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As German candidates tournament an organized annual tournament was from 1956 to 1969 German Chess Federation (DSB), respectively. The tournaments identified the majority of the participants in the final round of the German individual championship .

term

The German Candidates Tournament was not related to the Candidates Tournament of the World Chess Federation , the winner of which can challenge the world champion. "Candidates" were the applicants for the free places in the German Individual Championship.

background

At the DSB Federal Assembly in Munich in 1956, it was decided that the German individual championships should be held every two years as a round-robin tournament with sixteen participants. Only the four best players from the previous individual championship and the winners of the Dähne Cup were eligible . The other players had to qualify in the annual candidate tournaments.

Thirty players took part in each of these tournaments. In each tournament, five participants in the upcoming individual championship were determined. With the pre-authorized players and the ten qualifiers, the field of participants in the individual championship was completed in this way.

In 1969 the DSB Federal Assembly in Giessen decided on a far-reaching new regulation. The national German individual championship was to be played every two years with 30 to 36 participants in thirteen rounds according to the Swiss system (international German championships were planned for the uneven years). With the changed tournament regulations, the annual candidate tournaments were canceled.
