The German Medical History Museum (DMM) in Ingolstadt documents the history of medicine from antiquity to the present .

history

The establishment of the museum was suggested by the doctor and medical historian Heinz Goerke , who also initially directed the museum. The museum has been located in the old anatomy in Ingolstadt since 1973 . This late baroque, castle-like building was built between 1723 and 1736 according to plans by Gabriel de Gabrieli from the medical faculty of the former Bavarian state university and used as a university institute until 1800. After the university was relocated to Landshut , the building, which also included a medicinal garden, served u. a. as a farm before it was used today. The former anatomy room with its baroque ceiling fresco is particularly worth seeing .

The modern extension was completed in 2016 according to plans by the architect Volker Staab . It provides barrier-free access to the museum and, in addition to the foyer, also houses the special exhibition area, a seminar room, depot and offices.

The permanent exhibition was finally divided into two sections: The ground floor of the "Ancient Anatomy" was dedicated to early modern medicine and its origins in Greco-Roman antiquity . The upper floor started around 1830 and showed the differentiation of scientific medicine using the example of operational subjects and medical diagnostics up to around 1900. The permanent exhibition has been cleared since autumn 2015 due to renovation work. The reopening is announced for the beginning of 2020.

The medical technology department, which opened in September 2008 in a building at the end of the medicinal plant garden, presents a selection of the museum's extensive medical technology collection under the motto "Healing with laser and shock wave ".

Special collections

The special collections include graphics (approx. 2,500 doctor portraits), a collection by Thilo von Haugwitz (ophthalmology), one by Harald Feldmann (ear, nose and throat medicine), objects on clinical chemistry and obstetrics. After registration, trade visitors have the opportunity to use the graphics collection, the library and the object collections.

Botanical Garden

On the site of the university's former botanical garden, around 200 medicinal plants are cultivated in a facility based on baroque models , which are sorted according to their main ingredients. The rear part of the garden is designed as a blind garden and equipped with raised beds .
