The German Viticulture Museum is a national German museum in Oppenheim and shows exhibits from all 13 German wine-growing regions for quality wine . It is located on the edge of Oppenheim's old town.

history

The initiative to found the museum in 1978 arose in the small town in Rhine-Hesse , it is supported by the Association of Friends and Sponsors of the German Wine Museum as a financial and non-material sponsor. One of the initiators was Oskar Foltyn, who was the first director of the museum from 1980 to 1990. The opening of the museum took place on June 20, 1980.

building

The viticulture museum is housed in the former Deutscherrenhaus, also a historic civil hospital, which later became the adult education center. The eleven-axis building was built in 1746 and is characterized by an elegant, restrained classicist design language, which is based on the early French baroque style . It has two full storeys and a mansard hipped roof. The three-axis central risalit is crowned with a triangular gable (frontispiece) and stands out only through the bossed cuboid structure .

The grapevine has played a prominent role in Oppenheim for centuries. The location in the Rhine Valley, surrounded by vineyards, rounds off the combination of indoor and outdoor facilities.

5000 m² of exhibition space, spread over three floors in the late baroque building, an annex and two large open-air areas show 2000 years of wine-growing culture in Germany.
