The DZSF deals with the central issues of the rail sector as defined in the Federal Research Program Rail and provides solutions for them. Research fields are
- Economic efficiency ,
- Environment and sustainable mobility and
- Security .
The cross-cutting issues of digitization , automation , migration and legal issues are assigned to these three subject areas . These cross-cutting issues complement the integrative approach of the federal research program.
