Devario coxi is a bear of the genus Devario . It was only described in 2017and lives in streams in the district of Cox's Bazar , south and east of the city of Cox's Bazar in southeastern Bangladesh .

Devario coxi is a medium-sized species of the genus Devario with a standard length of 62 to 72 millimeters for adults . The bodies are elongated and laterally strongly flattened with a complete sideline . The females are slightly taller than the males. The basic color of preserved specimens is a yellowish white, the back is colored pale brown. The vivid color is a steel blue back with pale blue, greenish blue or green longitudinal stripes, yellow in between. The chest and belly are white. The central rays of the caudal fin are gray-green, the two lobes above and below red. Behind the gill cover is a conspicuous, highly oval, dark shoulder patch, behind it two lighter, curved horizontal stripes. Over four fifths of the body, three dark longitudinal stripes extend to the tail fin stalk.

There are 31 to 33 scales in the lateral row, 10 to 11 in the transverse row and 14 scales around the caudal stalk. The dorsal and anal fins are long with rounded tips. Their longest rays reach to the tail fin stalk. The caudal fin is forked, both lobes have rounded ends. The pectoral fins are rounded, they reach the base of the pelvic fins. The ventral fins are elongated but not pointed and end in front of the anal fin.

Devario coxi can be distinguished from all other species of the genus Devario by its unique pattern . It differs from the Malabar fish ( Devario aequipinnatus ) by the slightly larger number of dorsal fin rays and scales around the caudal peduncle as well as by the slightly higher body structure.

distribution

The type location is the Majerchora flowing to the Bay of Bengal , about ten kilometers south of Cox's Bazar ( 21 ° 23 ′ 45 ″  N , 92 ° 1 ′ 29.9 ″  E ). Another site is a small tributary of the Matamuhuri in the Bandarban district ( 21 ° 40 ′ 0 ″  N , 92 ° 18 ′ 0 ″  E ).

Systematics and taxonomy

Devario coxi is one of more than 40 species of the genus Devario Heckel , 1843, which forms with Danio , Microrasbora and several other genera the subfamily Danioninae in the family Bärblinge (Danionidae). Four of the species of the Devario genus have been recorded in Bangladesh: Devario devario with localities all over the country, Devario aequipinnatus whose distribution in Bangladesh is limited to the north of the Chittagong division , but which also occurs in northeast India, Devario coxi and the one described in 2009 Devario anomalus with localities in the district of Cox's Bazar and in the district of Bandarban . Devario coxi forms a clade with the morphologically similar Devario aequipinnatus , whose sister taxon is Devario deruptotalea .

The holotype is an adult male captured in May 2015, 63.8 millimeters standard length. It is in the collection of the University of Dhaka with a paratype . Two paratypes are kept in the collection of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and three in the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in Stockholm . For the species name coxi , the authors gave the first description three possible interpretations:

  • based on the type location Cox's Bazar;
  • as an allusion to the gene sequence COXI or MT-CO1, which was used to identify the species;
  • in honor of Hiram Cox (1760–1799), a British officer, diplomat and member of the Asiatic Society , after whom Cox's Bazar was named.
