Diablo is a video game series by the US company Blizzard Entertainment , which consists of Diablo (1996), Diablo II (2000) and Diablo III (2012) and belongs to the genre of action role-playing games or hack-and-slay games . Diablo was released for Windows , the classic Mac OS and PlayStation , Diablo II for Windows and Mac OS X , Diablo III for Windows, OS X, PS3 , PS4 , Xbox 360 , Xbox One and Nintendo Switch .

On the Blizzcon 2018 was Diablo Immortal for iOS and Android presented.

On the Blizzcon 2019 was Diablo IV announced.

Diablo I

Diablo is about the liberation of a world from the powerful demon Diablo . The player character roams through the mazes of 16 different levels in which he has to fight monsters in order to finally face Diablo himself in the last level.

By killing monsters, the character gains experience points, through which he reaches a higher character level and becomes more powerful. The basic components of the skills are the four character values “strength”, “magic”, “dexterity” and “vitality”. For each level up, the player receives five points, which he can distribute as desired between the four character values of his figure until they have reached a maximum value depending on the class. In addition, the possibilities and the initial values depend on the three character classes. A warrior mainly fights with melee weapons, a magician with magic and a huntress with ranged weapons.

Depending on the four character values, the secondary qualities are armor value, hit probability, life and mana points and damage capacity. All properties can also be influenced by magical equipment. Only the resistance to magic is influenced exclusively by this.

action

The action takes place in the world of Sanctuary , more precisely in the village of Tristram and in a dungeon below the church of the village. During the course of the game, the player is supported by the inhabitants of the village through trade, repair of equipment or information.

In the dungeon, the player fights against monsters and finds a wide variety of objects, such as weapons and armor, which support him with their special properties, or magic books in libraries, which allow him to further or improve spells. Often he also comes across mysterious shrines that have their good or bad effect when they are touched, or chests and sarcophagi, some of which are secured by traps and in which useful things can be contained. The dungeon, in which the actual game action takes place, is divided into 16 levels , four of which represent a common area in which similar opponents and a similar environment can be found.

In the single player mode, he has to repeatedly complete quests that are often given to him by the residents of the city and that bring a reward. At the end of the game there is the fight against Diablo.

Objects

The weapons that appear in the game are divided into different types (bows, axes, clubs, swords and staves), among which there are in turn different degrees, on which the damage to the weapon, but also the demands on the figure, depend. The same goes for armor, shields and helmets. Amulets and rings support the player through magical abilities. There are also books for permanent learning of a spell, scrolls for the one-time use of a spell, various potions and the gold used for trading.

All items also appear as magical items , which allow the player to further improve his skills as long as he is wearing them. Unique items have a special place among the magic items . While normal magical items only have up to three magical properties, unique items have up to six different magical properties and their own name.

magic

There are three basic types of spells: fire, lightning, and general magic. Each character can learn all spells, provided that the corresponding books are found and the character's magic value is sufficient to read them. This requires more or less magic points depending on the level and type of spell.

Game characters can be resistant to all three types of magic to a certain degree, and monsters can even be immune. The general magic spells also include abilities such as healing, telekinesis , resuscitation or summoning a golem .

development

The original development goes back to David Brevik and the brothers Erich and Max Schaefer. They founded Condor in 1993 , which Blizzard acquired shortly before Diablo's release and renamed Blizzard North. Inspired by games like NetHack , Moria and Angband and fascinated by JRR Tolkien and Might & Magic , they came up with the idea of developing a game that corresponded to their ideas based on these models. The real-time processes and the point-and-click control Diablo were not originally planned. Instead, Diablo was to become a turn-based DOS game. It was only through the collaboration with Blizzard, under whose leadership they were able to tackle their project, that Diablo was redesigned as a Windows real-time game.

Diablo expansion Hellfire

In the same year in which Diablo was released, ie 1997, Synergistic Software, a member of the Sierra Group , was commissioned to develop an extension for Diablo called "Hellfire" (English for Hellfire ). The time frame for this contract was very tight, so that the extension was published in December 1997. This made the product look unfinished - there was no embedding of Hellfire in the Diablo storyline and there was no multiplayer mode; however, this was delivered as a patch . In addition, the game crashed frequently , which was virtually non-existent in the basic Diablo application. There were later attempts by the gaming community to fix these remaining problems themselves in fan patches .

Two additional labyrinth areas with four levels each were new. There was also a new character class, the Monk , which was designed for staff fighting and magic and which managed or had to get along without heavy armor. Two other classes were developed, but were not available by default: These were the barbarian (appearance of the warrior), a pure fighter without any talent for magic and a bard (appearance of the hunter / robber) who could wield two weapons at the same time. There were also ten new spells, over 20 new monster types , numerous unique items , some new item types, six new quests, various oils that could be used to reinforce weapons, and runes.

There were two changes in the game mechanics: On the one hand, a player could now run in the city, albeit only in the form of a quick animation of walking, and on the other hand, there was a place in the game where one could keep an object and another of one's own Characters could transfer.

Diablo ii

Diablo II was released by Blizzard Entertainment in 2000. In 2001 the extension Lord of Destruction followed (English for Lord of Destruction , short LoD ). Diablo II has also become one of the most popular online games because of its free access to Battle.net . Further reasons for the high popularity of Diablo II are the well-balanced character classes and the very high variety of items, which leaves even advanced characters a lot of room for improvement. Since Diablo was not finally destroyed in the first part, in Diablo II you go out again with a new hero to put an end to him and his allies. With Baal and Mephisto , two more powerful demons, who are brothers Diablos, are given an important role.

Diablo III

Diablo III was released by Blizzard Entertainment on May 15, 2012 for Windows and Mac OS X. The action takes place 20 years after the events of the second part . The player character investigates the impact of a fallen star in the city of New Tristram and goes in search of Deckard Cain, who has disappeared since the impact.

Diablo Immortal

On the Blizzcon 2018 was Diablo Immortal for iOS and Android announced. In terms of content, this should tell the story of the 20 years between Diablo II and Diablo III .

Diablo IV

On the Blizzcon 2019 was Diablo IV announced.

At the start of Diablo IV , players can choose from five classes, including the barbarian, the sorceress and the druid. In addition, Diablo IV is to house an open world in which players can travel to five regions in any order, all of which are seamlessly connected to each other. There should also be mounts and a complete PvP system.

The sequel takes place many years after the events of Diablo III and will be much darker.

useful information

In Heroes of the Storm , various characters from the Diablo universe have been added as playable heroes.

In the role-playing game Sacred , the village of Tristram, the location of the first part of Diablo, was added as an Easter egg. If the player does not follow the main story, he will come across it sooner or later. The residents of the village ask him to go to the village square when he speaks to them and an idiosyncratic smacking noise can sometimes be heard. As soon as the player stands in the village square, all the villagers turn into the undead and attack the player.
