Temple of Diana (Valtice)
The so-called Diana Temple (also: Rendez-vous ) near Valtice Castle is a staffage building in the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Czech Republic .
Geographical location
The building is located on a hill in the Theimwald game reserve , 3 km northeast of Valtice Castle. The game reserve was surrounded by a 3 m high and 5 km long wall. There are avenues running through it. In addition to the Diana temple , there were other hunting pavilions here: the stag, roe deer and fir forest glorietten. The Diana temple was the most magnificent staffage building of all. On its southern side there is a pond, behind which the Valtice - Břeclav road runs. On the north, the building faces the minaret in the Lednice Castle park , about 7 km away.
building
The building is built in the classical style and in the shape of a triumphal arch . The arch of Titus served as a template for the building, the Arch of Constantine and Septimius Severus for the decoration - all in Rome - and for the architectural gesture the Arc de Triomphe of Napoleon in Paris . Functionally, however, the building is neither a temple nor a triumphal arch, rather a hunting lodge . The interior is accessed via a spiral staircase . Here was the Jägermeister's apartment, a salon and a stuccoed ballroom. The flat roof was used as a roof terrace .
The front sides are decorated with columns of Corinthian order and reliefs, including allegories of the times of day “morning” and “noon” (south side) and “evening” and “night” (north side), a homage to Diana , goddess of the hunt, as well as other Diana and Hunting scenes, all by Josef Klieber .
The area around the building was viewed as a park until 1945 and maintained accordingly. After that it became increasingly forested.
history
The building was designed by Joseph Hardtmuth for the Austrian field marshal Prince Johann I Josef von Liechtenstein and erected by Joseph Kornhäusel until 1812 after Joseph Hardtmuth retired . He then equipped it in 1813. The arch served the hunting parties of the prince as a backdrop for the hunting breakfast.
In 1872/73 the wall surrounding the game reserve was removed.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a house designed by Carl Weinbrenner for forest officials was built nearby.
