Diane Varsi

Diane Varsi (born February 23, 1938 in San Mateo , California , † November 19, 1992 in Hollywood , California) was an American film and television actress .

Life

Varsi made her film debut in the film Embers under the Ashes (in the original: Peyton Place ) in 1957 and was promptly nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress. In the same year she received the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actress alongside Sandra Dee and Carolyn Jones .

Varsi became well known for her appearance in Dalton Trumbo's anti-war film Johnny Goes to War , in which she played the sensitive nurse of Johnny, who now only consists of a senseless torso. She herself described Johnny Goes to War as the best film she was allowed to star in.

While shooting for the film Wild in the Streets Varsi suffered a severe trauma to the cervical spine , which, however, for years incorrectly diagnosed was and gave her permanent pain. In 1977, Varsi contracted Lyme disease and lived with undiagnosed meningitis for five years , which brought her to the verge of death several times. Neither her Lyme disease nor her vertebral injuries were recognized until 1989.

Varsi was married a total of three times. Her first marriage was canceled because she was not yet of legal age. From 1955 to 1958 she was married to James Dickson, with whom they had a son named Shawny. On May 21, 1961 she married Michael Hausmann, with whom she was married until her death and with whom she fathered a daughter named Willo.

On November 19, 1992, Varsi died in Los Angeles at the age of 54 from respiratory failure due to Lyme disease.

Since the American metal band Metallica secured the rights to Johnny Goes to War for their first music video for the song One , Varsi can be seen there in some excerpts from the film.
