The Dianpu He ( Chinese  淀浦河 , Pinyin Diànpǔ Hé , "river flowing out of the shallow lake") is a 46.4 km long river that flows through the east Chinese city of Shanghai . It is one of the drains of the Dianshan Lake (the "shallow lake" in its name) in the district of Qingpu , crosses the districts of Songjiang and Minhang to finally flow into the Huangpu Jiang in the district of Xuhui . The section east of the historic center of Qingpu ( 青浦 镇 , Pinyin Qīngpǔ Zhèn ) to Datie Bridge in the Songjiang district was originally called Puhui Tang ( 蒲 汇 塘 , " docks in the district of the Pu family"). This name has not officially been used since 1971 and the entire river is now called Dianpu He.

The Dianpu He has been an important waterway for goods transport between Anhui and Suzhou on the one hand and, over the Huangpu Jiang and the Yangtze River , the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea on the other hand , since the Song Dynasty (960–1279) . Therefore it was dredged 14 times between 1175 and 1910, then again after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1958/59, 1971 and 1976/77, with the river being straightened in several places. In 1934, the Shanghai municipal government, together with the then Songjiang and Qingpu counties, carried out dredging and dam construction work in the Qibao section (now the Minhang district), moving a total of 24,000 m³ of earth. In its current state of development, the river is 15-25 m wide at the bottom, with a slope angle of 1: 2 to 1: 3, and 2 m deep. It is approved for boats in the category up to 150 register tons.

The river construction works carried out in the 20th century shortened the route between Dianshan Lake and Huangpu Jiang by 30 km for inland waterway boats, while more than 30,000 hectares of low-lying land in the districts of Qingpu and Songjiang are now protected from damming water. With the dredging completed in January 1977, during which 140,000 workers from 6 circles had moved a total of 8,345,000 m³ of earth, the flow speed of the Dianpu He was also increased, which took away the habitat of the Oncomelania snail, an intermediate host of the schistosomiasis pathogen. This made an important contribution to the fact that the city of Shanghai was able to report the eradication of schistosomiasis in 1985.

The Chinese tonnage (吨位) is calculated from the difference between the water displacement of the fully loaded ship and the unloaded ship. Like the old German register bin, it is given in units of 2.832 m³ or 100 English cubic feet.
