Dirk Hendrik (Dick) Ket (born October 10, 1902 in Den Helder , † September 15, 1940 in Bennekom in the province of Gelderland ) was a Dutch painter , graphic artist and lithographer .

He was the son of Libbe Ket, a pharmacist's assistant, and Juliana Christina Otten. Dick Ket was born with a serious heart defect (presumably Fallot tetralogy with dextrocardia ). He suffered all his life and died from it at the age of 38.

Ket spent his youth in The Hague from 1919 to 1920 and in Hoorn from 1921 to 1922 . From 1922 to 1925 he studied at the Arnhemer Genossenschaft Kunstoefening (drawing school for fine arts and crafts) in Arnhem with Gerard van Lerven (1885–1966). From 1929 to 1930 he lived in Ede . Because of his illness, he spent the rest of his life in his parents' house in Bennekom.

Ket created around 140 paintings, including around forty self-portraits, a few portraits of other people, many still lifes and, in his early creative period, Impressionist landscapes, as well as drawings and graphic works - woodcuts, linoleum cuts and lithographs. From around 1929 he switched from Impressionism to New Objectivity and Magical Realism . He became a member of the Arti et Amicitiae Society in 1935 .

In 1932 Ket received the Willink van Collenprijs for a portrait of his father, who was sitting on a chair with a hat and cape. In 1935, Queen Wilhelmina awarded the painter the gold medal for a self-portrait with beret.

In his most recent self-portraits, the symptoms of his progressive suffering, such as cyanosis and drumstick fingers , can be seen.

Museums with works by Dick Ket include the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam , Museum Arnhem and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam .
