Dicranella (in German also small fork tooth Moose ) is a genus of mosses that the similar fork tooth mosses ( Dicranum look), but most are much smaller.
description
As a rule, mosses are only 1–2 cm high and usually grow on earth in low, loose or dense lawns.
The leaves have a narrow oval, often sheath-shaped base, and in most species are drawn out into a very long and narrow tip. In many species the leaves are one-sided and curved sickle-shaped, in others protruding or curled. In contrast to the genus Dicranum , the cells in the leaf wings are not particularly differentiated.
The capsules stand on an upright, red or yellow seta and are upright or inclined.
Distribution and location requirements
The genus is distributed almost worldwide. Most species prefer open-ground, slightly acidic locations, for example on loamy or sandy-loamy areas in forests, others on peat in bogs . Many species are the first to colonize such locations and, in addition to spores, can also reproduce vegetatively through rhizoid gems.

The genus contains around 100 species, 12 of which are found in Europe.

- Dicranella rigidula
- Dicranella riparia
