Adoption ( Hungarian Örökbefogadás ) is a Hungarian feature film from 1975. Márta Mészáros directed and became the first woman to win the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival . The film is seen together with Nine Months (1976) and Ok Chain (1977) as a trilogy by Mészáros about motherhood and relationships among women.

action

Kata works in a grinding factory and lives alone in a small house. She has a secret love affair with Jóska, who is married to another woman, has two children with her and is not planning to get a divorce. Kata, on the other hand, is in her forties and wants to try her last chance to get pregnant from Jóska and have a child. Jóska refuses.

Some girls from the boarding school near Kata's house attend kata. One of the girls, Anna, wants to use Kata's house to meet her friend Sanyi, with whom she is not allowed to meet at boarding school. Kata sends the girls away because she doesn't know them. But soon a friendship develops between Anna and Kata. Kata enables Anna to meet her boyfriend at her house and, at Anna's request, persuades her parents to allow her underage daughter to marry her boyfriend.

At Anna and Sanyi's wedding, Anna becomes sad and has an argument with her newlywed husband. Inspired by her friendship with Anna, Kata decides to adopt a child. After she has overcome the bureaucratic hurdles, Kata picks up her adopted child.

Awards

At the 1975 Berlin International Film Festival , the film won the festival's main prize, the Golden Bear. Adoption was the Hungarian entry for the " Best Foreign Language Film " category at the 1976 Academy Awards , but it was not nominated.

After winning the Golden Bear, the film was shown in numerous countries and discussed by critics, but in Hungary itself the film received little recognition, according to Mészáros.

In 2018, the film was restored using the original camera negative and magnetic sound and with the help of cameraman Lajos Koltai .
