The Resurrection of the Riding Corpses ( La mansión de los muertos vivientes ; German alternative title: The Residence of the Riding Corpses or Mansion of the Living Dead ) is a sexploitation film enriched with pornographic elements by the Spanish director Jess Franco from 1985. A small, remote town on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria is the center of the Inquisition in the 18th century . A little later, the blonde Mabel secretly begins a tender romance with the married Carlos, who chauffeurs her to the monastery with the cowl-wearing undead, where the beauty is brutally abused and tortured several times in a "cleansing ritual". Carlos and his gardener are well-constituted Templars whose progressive physical decline is not evident.
Candy and Caty have no idea of such conditions. The vacation turns into a nightmare for the two women, who are always scantily clad. Candy is immediately startled by strange voices. She sneaks through the abandoned multi-storey property until she discovers a naked woman named Olivia, chained by her neck, on an upper floor, who turns out to be Carlos' slave-like love. The debilitating prisoner, entangled in a strange love-hate relationship with Carlos, warns Candy about her sadistic master, whom she adores and adores despite everything. Olivia informs the visitor about the local activities and advises her to flee. The disturbed Candy meets the hotel owner and confronts him. The man pretends to want to protect his schizophrenic partner from himself by chaining. Carlos and Candy are instantly likeable to each other. The hotelier, who was extremely silent up to this point, exerts an undreamt-of fascination for the waitress. Thereupon he breaks his silence and finally falls in love with the holidaymaker, whom he believes to be the reincarnated Princess Irina, a revenant who seems to have come to "save" his soul with her love and thus give him eternal rest.
Near an old monastery of the Knights Templar, Candy becomes the community's holy victim to the ringing of bells in a brutal ritual that includes mass rape. Prior to this, Candy kills her friend Cathy in a kind of trance , while Carlos gets rid of the jealous Olivia so as not to tarnish his judgment regarding his true love. At the end of the film, Carlos's condition improves, he finds the longed-for eternal peace after a kiss, while the rest of the Templars eke out a vague existence. Candy escapes from the Templar community with an unknown destination.
criticism
Serious critics avoided the film; Fans judge: "This work should be absolutely useless for mainstream consumers, while Franco and sexploitation fans get their money's worth, because with little effort Franco created a nice and atmospheric little horror film enriched with a lot of bare skin." so wicked vision.
Remarks
The film was released in several different versions and, depending on the version, contains more or less pornographic content. Most of the outdoor shots took place in Gran Canaria . The film was released in Spanish cinemas on November 18, 1985.
The genre production with horror elements, contrary to the misleading German distribution title, has nothing in common with the film series " Reitende Leichen ".
