I am gentrification. Confession of a Darkling is an essayistic documentary by Swiss filmmaker Thomas Haemmerli from 2017 .

Synopsis

In his humorous documentary essay, the Swiss Thomas Haemmerli approaches topics such as urban development , the housing market , architecture , “density stress” , xenophobia and gentrification . Here, the project prescribes an autobiographical access: The big bow are diverse living situations of the author, starting with the childhood in the residential quarter Zurich Mountain , about squats , WGs and yuppie Appartments, to dwellings in large cities such as Tbilisi , São Paulo and Mexico City .

Ultimately, the author is the prime example of a gentrifier in the form of a fashionably old father who is driving Zurich's appreciation by buying a large apartment. National conservatives who claim that living space is becoming scarce because of immigration are also mocked , as are the left , who are opposed to the modern architecture and energetic densification of cities.
