from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Switzerland , from 2003 to 2016, one word of the year was determined by a private jury. In 2015 the jury consisted of the writer Peter Stamm , the rapper Manillio , the columnist Yonni Meyer aka Pony M. , the columnist Bänz Friedli and the author Daniel Quaderer . The population took part in this action with around 2000 word suggestions each year.

year Bad word of the year From the reasons given by the jury
2016 Domestic priority light "This typically Swiss word creation reflects the efforts of politicians to implement a referendum and to accommodate everyone as possible: the winners and losers, the EU, local job seekers. [...]"
2015 Asylum chaos The so-called wave of refugees in summer and autumn 2015 largely passed Switzerland by. Nevertheless, fear was specifically fueled during the election campaign .
2014 Density stress Originally borrowed from ornithology , according to the jury, the word “density stress” was unduly used by bourgeois politicians in connection with the mass immigration and ecopop initiatives .
2013 systemically relevant The word “systemically important” is a mockery. If a financial institution dances on the legal system long enough, it will be declared systemically relevant.
2012 Bio “In the meantime,“ organic ”is being used inflationarily and abused by retailers in the battle for customers, with the result that the population is getting tired of the term“ organic ”and it loses its effect."
2011 Technology ban “A word creation for pure propaganda purposes. The word is simply an invention of the nuclear lobby, originated in the discussion about the nuclear phase-out after the disaster in Fukushima. This conceals the fact that a nuclear phase-out will lead to a technology boost for alternative energies. "
2010 FIFA Ethics Committee “Due to the repeated allegations of corruption around FIFA and its officials, the world football association now intends to use a home-made committee to solve its home-made problems. In the opinion of the jury, straining the term ethics committee is a complete contradiction - no ifs or buts. "
2009 Valve clause The «valve clause» describes the regulation of immigration and return immigration of people from the EU to Switzerland in a sober and technological way.
2008 Europhoria “Europhoria” describes the anticipation that is allegedly evident in Switzerland for the 2008 European Football Championship . According to the jury, the “linguistic mistake” was “advertising speech in its purest form” and, despite widespread media coverage, did not make it into everyday language. Switzerland does not allow itself to be “forced euphoric”.
2007 Climate compensation "Climate compensation" was invented to supposedly limit climate-damaging behavior. For example, if you book a flight, you can support an environmentally friendly project by paying an additional amount of money. The “climate compensation” presents itself as a win-win situation and suggests a solution that is in fact a sham. The consumer does not have to change his behavior and has eased his conscience, at least the economy does not suffer any losses and politics does not give the impression of inaction. "
2006 extended suicide According to the jury, "extended suicide" is a clear linguistic mistake. It obscures and belittles the concept of murder and is a contradiction in terms, since by definition, suicide can only affect one person.
2005 experience-oriented fan According to a spokesman for the Zurich police, "adventure-oriented fans" are violent or violent, they are chaos, seek confrontation with the police, but are not hooligans because they attack each other.
2004 Eco-terror Formulation by the Mayor of Zurich Elmar Ledergerber on the appeal of the Swiss Transport Club (VCS) against the shopping center in the new Zurich stadium.
2003 Sham invalids Formulation by the Swiss Federal Councilor Christoph Blocher , which represents a blanket defamation of all people with a disability.
