The Hawking affair is an American feature film of the genre thriller from 1997. The director was Sam Firstenberg , the writer wrote Marianne Wibberley and Cormac Wibberley . The main roles were played by Sean Young and Soleil Moon Frye .

Kyle Rivers ( Soleil Moon Frye ), 23 , joins the Department of Defense as an investigator. Her boss MacIntyre hires her to work with colleague Daniel Larimer to investigate Lana Hawking ( Sean Young ), who works for an armaments company and is supposed to gain access to classified information.
Rivers and Larimer find that Hawking often experiences erotic adventures, for which she usually rents a room at the Motel Blue . Although the regulations forbid contact with the observed people, Rivers hired in the Hawkings company. One day she is invited to dinner by Lana; every woman says she would like to be like the other. Hawking undresses and tries to seduce Kyle. At that moment, Lana's husband Wayne returns home, who beats her up a little later.
Lana strangles her husband and fabricates evidence that suggests Rivers was the perpetrator. She was arrested but released on bail. Kyle continues investigating and discovers that Lana Hawking, who had access to some classified information ten years ago, sold it. MacIntyre, who was Lana's lover, covered her. It also turns out that Wayne's wife was murdered, Lana Hawking is his daughter, who assumed the identity of her own mother.
Lana disappears, Kyle tracks her down in her own hometown, where Lana lives under the name Kyle Rivers . Suddenly MacIntyre appears and wants to shoot Lana with Kyle's pistol to make Kyle look like the perpetrator. Lana offers him cash that has been hidden in the house. MacIntyre shoots Lana, after a fight with Kyle he is shot with the same pistol. Kyle takes the money, takes the name Lana Hawking , and moves to Las Vegas .

The film received rather positive reviews, with particular praise for supporting actors Seymour Cassel , Lou Rawls and Robert Vaughn (movies2.nytimes.com). Some parts of the plot were criticized as unbelievable ( unbelievable , see apolloguide.com).
