Due to the fact that her friend Richard from Berlin has passed away, Ruth travels to her old home again. There she remembers Max Schönbeck, her great love, who did not show up at the agreed meeting point when she wanted to flee Germany with him; Ruth, who was pregnant at the time, did not know the reason for his non-appearance. It was later said that he had died in Stalingrad. But then she realizes, based on numerous pieces of evidence, that it is a lie.
