The Ruhrpottkanaken is a German punk rock band from Mülheim an der Ruhr from the area of local heroes that was active in the 1990s. After it was dissolved in early 2000, it re-established itself in December 2015 to play live again.

Band history

The band consisted of Cem “Käpt'n Iglo” Yurdatap ( vocals ), Marc “Foxy” Unkel ( guitar ), Carsten “Hotte” Jäger ( bass ) and the two local hero members Christof “Fisch” Schneiderbanger and Jörg “Blüm” Neuenfeldt ( Drums ). The band name goes back to soccer chants. The fans of FC Schalke 04 , who were often attacked in the chants as " Ruhrpott - Kanaken " , especially at the games against Eintracht Frankfurt , then simply adopted this mocking name as a self-designation. The name was also chosen on the basis of the Turkish background of singer Cem "Käpt'n Iglo" Yurdatap.

The first EP Die Kids vom Spilla was released via Scumfuck Tradition in 1993, followed in 1994 by Foxy need 'ne pearl . The band then switched to the Teenage Rebel Records label , on which the local heroes also released their records. In 1995 the group's only album to date was released, Die Barke mit der Glasischen Güter . The album features Der Tag als Ian Stuart died, a mocking song of the late neo-Nazi singer Ian Stuart Donaldson by Skrewdriver , among others , based on The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down or its German counterpart On the Day when Conny Kramer died of Juliane Werding . In the same year the compilation Schürbeln until the roof truss cracks was released! with all single titles. In 1997 the band took part in the compilation dedicated to FC Schalke, Wir sind Schalker und You nicht with four exclusive titles.

The band broke up in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After more than 15 years the band reformed for some live gigs, but without Carsten “Hotte” Jäger.

Music style and lyrics

Musically, the group processed influences from American street punk around groups like the New Bomb Turks and tried to break away from the German punk scene of the 1990s. Similar to other bands from the Ruhr area, they served a chubby image with a penchant for alcohol consumption and lyrics that were more likely to be assessed as sexist . In the case of the Ruhrpottkanaken, however, there were also political texts about xenophobia .
