The Schlumpers are a studio community founded by Rolf Laute in Hamburg in 1980 .

history

founding

In 1980 the Hamburg artist Rolf Laute carried out an art in construction contract to build the new Wilfried Borck House with the participation of residents in Alsterdorf, and in 1984 founded the studio community “Die Schlumper”, a group of artists with various disabilities; initially as a provisional studio in the former DRK hospital "Beim Schlump". "In the beginning the idea of an art group was not in the foreground", says Rolf Laute, "but there were simply artists".

"Die Schlumper" was named after the place where the artists initially worked - near the underground station " Schlump " - in the basement of the "Stadthaus Schlump". Here Rolf Laute founded an initially improvised studio.

“What happens unexpectedly without preliminary thoughts, without art, is Schlump, the unexpected stroke of luck,” write the Brothers Grimm in their dictionary.

"Schlump", as it is called in the German dictionary, is the "unexpected stroke of luck", which can definitely be considered an apt characterization of the Schlumper art forms.

Work project "Schlumper von Profession"

Artists with various disabilities between the ages of 20 and 80, some of whom lived in the greater Hamburg area in assisted living facilities of various providers, soon joined the "Schlumpern" group; some could only use the Atelier am Schlump outside of their working hours.

With the help of the "Friends of Schlumper" association founded in 1985 and the support of the "Authority for Labor, Health and Social Affairs, Hamburg", Rolf Laute was able to initiate the "Schlumper von Beruf" project in 1993. Since then, "the Schlumpers" have been able to use their artistic skills professionally and are paid as freelance artists. Since the beginning of 2002, the former work project with socially insured artist jobs has belonged to the Ev. Alsterdorfer Foundation, Alster work area.

Atelier in the old beef slaughterhouse

In 1998 the Schlumpers moved to the Alte Rinderschlachthalle in Hamburg-St. Pauli . This new studio doubles as an exhibition space and an event location with a café. In cooperation with the employees of the Alsterarbeit day-care facility, work is carried out here every week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Works of old and new Schlumpers and artists from related projects are shown alternately. During non-working times, especially on weekends, the rooms can also be rented for private events. Books, catalogs, posters and postcards are sold in the café. There is also the opportunity to talk to Schlumpern. Guided tours for groups of visitors through the studio are possible after registration.

Handover of sponsorship to the Ev. Alsterdorfer Foundation, Alster work area

At the beginning of 2002 the association "Friends of the Schlumper" sponsored the Ev. Alsterdorfer Foundation, Alster work area transferred to permanently secure the future of the artist group. The association continues to support the project ideally and materially. He is responsible for the marketing of the works of art and the acquisition of donations in order to secure the artistic work, the exhibition activities and the monthly remuneration of the Schlumper. The work of the Schlumper will u. a. also used for art-in-building projects, posters, record covers, etc.

"The Schlumper" today

The work of the Schlumper has been presented in numerous exhibitions; they are among the top international achievements of so-called Outsider Art (Art brut), which has become increasingly important in the art and culture industry in recent years. Works by Schlumper are represented in numerous private and public collections. Organizational matters and assistance is provided by educators, artists and interns (community service providers used to be involved). The artists in the studio community are being recognized more and more nationally and internationally and have also been awarded art prizes. Stefanie Bubert received the 1st prize of the Aktion Kunst Stiftung 2015.

Cooperation with day care centers and schools

Right from the start, the Schlumpers attached great importance to working with children. Several interior and exterior designs were created in day care centers and schools.

Since 1995 there has been a cooperation between the Schlumpern and the integrative all-day elementary school "Louise Schroeder Schule" (formerly the Chemnitzstrasse School) in Hamburg-Altona-Altstadt . It was u. a. the stairwell in the historic school building was redesigned. Since 1995 artists and pupils from the Louise Schroeder School have been working together on artistic projects in the studio on Thedestrasse at the “Schule der Schlumper”. "It's a very exciting process when unusual artists like the Schlumper create art together with children," said Rolf Laute about the project.

The next step: the new Schlumper gallery

Exterior view of the new Schlumper gallery, 2014

On June 27, 2014, one of the artists' dreams finally came true: their own gallery was opened. In the heart of Hamburg's Karoviertel , at Marktstrasse 131, you can see your own works and those of friends and groups and other artists. The new gallery covers around 150 square meters on two floors. The first floor of the new building was originally intended to be used as a greengrocer's shop. The new premises will significantly improve their working conditions, said Anna Pongs-Laute, Schlumper's artistic director. The new “Forum for Art and Inclusion” is largely financed by the Hans Kauffmann Foundation and the proceeds from the sale of pictures. The project is still dependent on donations.
