Die Sumpfhanne is a German silent film drama directed by Carl Boese . Charlotte Böcklin plays the title role .

action

Hanne Woyda leads a difficult life. The poor peasant girl has a relationship with the upper village Jan, but the latter proves to be haughty and publicly rejects her at a dance event when she asks him to swear. Ashamed and deeply hurt, Hanne runs away. On her way she meets the red Merten, a raw and neglected guy who was only recently released from prison. Hanne would like to use Merten to take revenge on Jan, who treated her so badly. She promises the vagabond that she will give herself to him should he help her with her plan. Merten initially accommodated Hanne as a barmaid in a pub. Since she is quite pretty, she quickly gets admirers and patrons who try to land with her.

One day Jan sees Hanne again and is disgusted at how she gives herself up and sunk deep in his eyes. Hanne has long since become the slut of a social climber and has sold herself to them at high prices. Jan tries in vain to save her from this environment. Hanne is lucky one day when she meets a young lord of the castle, who takes her in and eventually even marries her. In an act of exuberance and a feeling of revenge, she hires Jan as stable master. Now it is she who can look down on him. Hanne cheats on her noble husband with Jan, whereupon the lord of the castle dies (of a broken heart). Hanne returns to old waters and begins to meet numerous men.

The men who fall into Hanne's hands are ultimately thrown into ruin by her, and it is of all people the former criminal and prisoner Merten who believes that a dead Hanne could cause less harm in the world. While trying to kill her, Jan himself kills him. Hanne flees from the bloody event in the direction of the swamp, followed by Jan. Only late does he realize what a bad character Hanne, who was once loved by him but then rejected, goes crazy. You made him a murderer, he yells, takes the girl and throws her into the swamp. Legend has it that Hanne Woyda who sinks there becomes the swamp hanne.

criticism

“Splendid social scenes with rich equipment, two excellent dance scenes and a dog scene with astonishing training are essentially the strong points of the film, which are complemented by the particularly beautiful photography (Mutz Greenbaum). The presentation knows how to adapt to the milieu quite well. Above all the pretty, versatile Charlotte Böcklin - equally good as a peasant girl, countess and prostitute; spirited and believable in facial expressions and gestures (...) Carl Boese directed the film in a commendable routine. The work of the architect J. Ballenstedt deserves special praise. "
