content

Over several years, an interdisciplinary group of scientists designed possible overall scenarios for long-term evolution on Earth without human influence and taking into account likely geological and climatic changes. In each case, habitats and possible, living in them newly formed species in five, 100 and 200 million years ago (Episode 1: Ice Age, Episode 2: Greenhouse, Episode 3: Neuland) designed and visualized with sophisticated computer and animation technology.

The possible further shifting of the continental plates according to today's measurement results and the associated drastic climatic changes due to increased volcanism could lead on the one hand to a large-scale extinction of many species , on the other hand to the formation of a single new supercontinent Amasia / Pangea ultima , which would be faced by a huge world ocean . As the food supply for surviving fish species is therefore reduced and they have to travel longer distances, they transform their pectoral fins into wings and their swim bladder into lungs. They could fly long distances across the ocean in search of food and breed on land. They would take the place of the extinct sea birds . This hypothetical stage of evolution was identified with the made-up word Flisch .

In addition to the fishes, a number of other possible new species have been described. The development is based on the well-known laws of previous evolution (for example there are already " flying fish " that jump long distances and move over the water in gliding flight), but it is by no means mandatory, but one of many possible. In the vision of the future shown - according to the trend towards the extinction of mammals, which has been demonstrable for thousands of years - there are no more humans, also because an earth influenced by humans is not considered to be predictable within the framework of evolutionary theory.

There is an animated series called The Future Is Wild that includes the creatures of the documentary. The book Pangea - The Eighth Day is also largely based on the films. An exhibition for the television broadcast is shown in the dinosaur park in Münchehagen (as of 2013).

book

In 2002 the Egmont Vgs appeared in Germany. Publisher-published book The Future Is Wild , by Dougal Dixon and Joanna Adams . The book Pangea - The eighth day by Andreas Schlueter and Mario Giordano is also largely based on the films, but has its own plot.
