Population Zero - The World Without Us is an American , Canadian and German documentary based on the 2007 nonfiction book Die Welt ohne Uns by Alan Weisman . It was produced by Stephen Milton for the National Geographic Channel , ProSieben and History Television . The narrator in the English-language original is Reg E. Cathey ; Frank Röth speaks in the German version .

content

The content of the film is based on the non-fiction book Die Welt ohne Uns . The thought experiment is shown, how long it would take until nature would take back the human habitat.

First it is shown how the world would change in the first minutes after the disappearance of mankind. The observed time intervals are getting bigger and bigger; hours, days, months and finally decades of human absence are shown. The effects on the technology and cities left behind, but also on flora and fauna , are examined more closely. Both domesticated, captive and wild animals are treated.

The earth is 4.5 billion years old. In the last 10,000 years, mankind cut down about half of the forests. Without humans, these would grow back in 500 years. Half of the fresh water on the planet has been consumed by humans. In addition, two thirds of the rivers have been canalized and dammed. After 200 years, the rivers would have freed themselves from the largest dams in the world and cleaned them up through the self-healing power of nature. In the last years of the industrial age, carbon dioxide emissions were 13.5 billion tons annually. The plants and the sea would be able to compensate for this burden within a few centuries. The urban development would deteriorate after 120 years. After 25 years, most of the matter contaminated by destroyed nuclear power plants would have seeped into the ground. The animal and plant populations would recover from human interference over time.

The bottom line is that the earth can do very well without humanity, but humanity cannot do without the earth.
