action
On the evening of March 18, 1918, shortly before the German spring offensive , the young English lieutenant Raleigh was transferred to the western front in Captain Stanhope's company. He is happy to meet Stanhope, whom he knows from before and who is engaged to his sister. The war changed Stanhope, however; he's disaffected and turned into an alcoholic. However, he tries to continue to maintain the image of the exemplary officer. Fearing that Raleigh might write the truth about him to his sister, he censors the letter, which only says good things about him.
Lieutenant Osborne and Raleigh are said to have captured a German during an advance against the German lines so that they can interrogate him. Osborne is killed and Raleigh is confronted with the horrors of war. After Raleigh is badly wounded in an attack by the Germans, he is taken to Stanhope, where he dies in the latter's arms.
Finally, the British officer's shelter was hit by grenades and destroyed.
criticism
"A sincere film against the war - in a sense the German version of Nothing New in the West, " said the lexicon of international films .
