Hans Reisiger

Walter Ernst Hans Reisiger (born October 22, 1884 in Breslau ; † April 29, 1968 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German writer and translator .

Life

Hans Reisiger was the son of the post office clerk Hugo Reisiger and his wife, a née Thomala. After attending a humanistic grammar school in Breslau , Hans Reisiger studied law and philosophy at the universities of Berlin and Munich . He broke off this study and stayed from 1907 to 1911 as a freelance writer in Florence and Rome . Reisiger took part in the First World War from 1915 to 1918 as a member of the sea ​​pilots with the rank of flight mate . In the twenties and thirties he lived in Switzerland , Tyrol and Munich and from 1938 to 1945 in Berlin . He turned down the offer made by his friend Thomas Mann in May 1938 to emigrate to the USA and take up a chair at the University of California at Berkeley .

After the Second World War , Reisiger worked as an editor for Rowohlt-Verlag and as a translator for Reader's Digest magazine.

Hans Reisiger's literary work includes novels , short stories and poems . Reisiger has emerged primarily as a translator of numerous literary works from English and French; his greatest achievement is his translation of Walt Whitman's works into German. Reisiger's estate is in the German Literature Archive in Marbach am Neckar .

Hans Reisiger was a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt and the German PEN Center . 1947 awarded him the University of Munich the honorary doctorate , in 1959 the country Baden-Wuerttemberg the title of professor . In the same year Reisiger received the honorary gift of the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft in the Federation of German Industry .

Hans Reisiger was buried in the Garmisch cemetery in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
