Diego Hidalgo (born April 18, 1993 in Guayaquil ) is an Ecuadorian tennis player .
Career
Hidalgo was already active as a junior on the ITF Junior Tour and in 2011 played three of the four Grand Slam tournaments . This year he reached his career record with a combined 16th place. In 2013 he began studying at the University of Florida at Gainesville , where he also played college tennis . In 2016 he was voted SEC Player of the Year.
He made his professional debut in 2007 when he was in the main draw in doubles on the ITF Future Tour and ATP Challenger Tour . In 2011 he won his first double title on the Future Tour. The first successes were also achieved on the Challenger Tour. In 2011 he reached the semi-finals for the first time in Montevideo . In the following year he was in the game against Colombia for the first time in the squad of the Ecuadorian Davis Cup team . Here he lost both his singles and doubles. During his studies he only played tournaments irregularly, so that he was no longer included in the world rankings . After completing his studies, he started playing tournaments regularly from the 2017 season and was able to advance into the top 300 in the world rankings thanks to successes on the Future Tour in doubles.
In 2018 Hidalgo took part in the South American Games. In the individual he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the eventual winner Marcelo Tomás Barrios Vera . In doubles he and his partner Emilio Gómez won the gold medal by beating the Peruvian pairing Jorge Panta / Juan Pablo Varillas in the final . He was in the Davis Cup again in 2018 and 2019 , where he won his single game and two of the three doubles. While he won his first future title in singles in June 2019, he was more successful in doubles. After a semi-final defeat at the Challenger in Binghamton , he moved into the final with Martin Redlicki in Lexington the following week . There they defeated the top seeded pairing Roberto Maytín / Jackson Withrow in straight sets. A month later he reached his previous career high with 258th place. In the individual, the 376th place is his best result so far.
