Luis Diego López Breijo (born August 22, 1974 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan soccer player and current soccer coach . He played in the position of defender and was active for most of his career for the Sardinian club Cagliari Calcio . He is currently the head coach of Peñarol Montevideo .
Player career

López started his career at River Plate Montevideo , where he stayed until mid-1996 before moving to Racing Santander in the Spanish Primera División for the 1996/97 season. Here he belonged to the regular formation. For the 1998/99 season López then moved to Cagliari Calcio in the Italian Serie A , where he was part of the regular staff with the exception of the first season. After more than 12 years with the club, he ended his career after the 2009/10 season. For the Italians, he completed a total of 314 games in which he scored seven goals.
National team
López was part of the squad of the Uruguayan U-17 selection at the U-17 World Cup in 1991 in Italy . There he played all three games with Uruguayan participation and scored the only tournament goal of the Celeste in the 1-0 victory over the Cuban national team . He was a member of the Uruguayan U-20 selection at the U-20 South American Championship in Colombia in 1992 . Uruguay finished the tournament as vice South American champion. During the tournament he was used by coach Ángel Castelnoble four times (no goal). With the junior selection , he played the Junior World Cup in 1993 .
He was also a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team . For this he completed a total of 39 internationals from his debut on October 19, 1994 to his last appearance on November 12, 2005. He didn't score a goal. With the Celeste he took part in the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup . The Uruguayan international achieved the greatest success of his playing career in 1995 when he won the Copa America with his home country.
Coaching career
At Cagliari Calcio López was responsible for the team in the Primavera since July 2012. With the Italians he replaced after the sixth match day of the 2012/13 season together with Ivo Pulga Massimo Ficcadenti as coach of the Serie A team. Sometimes he is referred to as an assistant coach. In December 2013 he will be the main coach responsible for the club. Other sources date his head coach role at Cagliari to the period July 2013 to April 2014. On July 1, 2014 López was introduced as the new coach of FC Bologna . On May 4, 2015, he was released from his duties as head coach for the Italians. At the end of January 2017, he took over the position of head coach at US Palermo as the successor to Eugenio Corini . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. He was released on April 11, 2017. At this time, the club occupied the penultimate place in the Serie A table .
On October 18, 2017, López was presented as the successor to Massimo Rastelli at Cagliari Calcio .
