Dieter D. Genske (born December 20, 1956 in Leverkusen ) is a German geologist , civil engineer and university professor. He teaches as a professor of geotechnics and urban redevelopment at the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and as a visiting professor at the University of Liechtenstein . In 2012 he received the European Solar Prize.

Career

After graduating as a qualified civil engineer from the Bergische Universität Wuppertal in 1980, Genske continued his academic training at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen , which he completed in 1985 as a qualified geologist. In the following years he pursued a doctoral degree at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, which he completed in 1989 as a doctoral engineer with his dissertation on the subject of "Approach to a probabilistic security concept".

From 1989 to 1990 Genske, as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Kyoto, Japan, devoted himself to geotechnical and environmental problems, which he also addressed in his work at the Institute for Water and Soil Protection of the Deutsche Montan Technologie DMT Society for Research and Testing, Essen took up, where he worked as a department head until 1994. During this time he was involved in important urban redevelopment projects such as the international building exhibition Emscher Park and the new government district in Berlin as well as the Graf Moltke visualization project (Ruhr area) in cooperation with the Cologne Media Academy. In 1994 he was appointed professor of engineering geology at the Technical University of Delft . This was followed by the appointment as professor extraordinaire at the EPF Lausanne and a visiting professorship at the ETH Zurich .

Since 2004 he has held the professorship for landscape technology and land recycling at the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. In October 2010 he was appointed an adjunct professor here because of his services as a researcher and university professor. In addition to several guest professorships at universities in Germany, Switzerland, Japan and South Africa, he has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Architecture and Spatial Development at the University of Liechtenstein since 2009. In addition to his academic activities, Genske led various development projects in low-income countries in Africa and Eastern Europe.

Professorship at Nordhausen University

At the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, Genske is involved in the geotechnical and energy-ecological urban redevelopment courses. He also holds the office of Dean of Studies for his subject area. His main research areas include geotechnics, area and energy as well as geostatistics. In addition to his academic work, Genske is involved in the departmental advisory board and the advisory board for international relations.

Scientific collaborations and projects

In addition to his work as a professor at the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and as a visiting professor at the University of Liechtenstein, Genske was involved in several high-level projects, including the study “Basel on the way to the 2000-watt society”, the project “BAER Bodensee-Alpenrhein energy region” and at the "EnergieWerkStadt", which was commissioned by the European Fund for Regional Development-Transnational Activities ERDF-TNA. With his team he developed the study "Use of urban open spaces for renewable energies" for the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR), the "Thuringian Inventory and Potential Atlas for Renewable Energies" for the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Labor and Technology, the “Renewable Liechtenstein” expertise for the University of Liechtenstein and the “Energy Efficiency on Site Effort” project (2013–2015) for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Berlin. Together with Ariane Ruff and Aloys Graw, he founded "EKP Energie-Klima-Plan GmbH" Nordhausen in 2009 as a spin-off from the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences.

Awards

For his services as a researcher and scientist, Genske was also honored for his outstanding achievements outside of his teaching activities. In 1989 he received a research grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Kyoto , Japan. In 2000, an award and funding for an interactive distance learning project followed by the ETH Board in Zurich, Switzerland. The Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences honored Genske in 2007 for outstanding third-party funding. In 2012 he received the European Solar Prize, which he received together with his Nordhäuser research group and the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg for planning the energetic conversion of a residential area in Hamburg and the knowledge gained from it about climate-neutral energy generation in large cities.
