Dieter Karpinski (born September 12, 1940 in Neuchâtel ( East Prussia ), † April 4, 2007 in Berlin ) was a German administrative director, managing director and diaconal director.

Live and act

In 1967, Karpinski was appointed administrative director of the St. Elisabeth Monastery, which was founded in 1856, on Eberswalder Straße in what was then the Prenzlauer Berg district in (East) Berlin . In the following years he held the titles of managing director and director. The graduate economist organized public events in the monastery building including the chapel , among other things to attract young talent. In the discussions that he has had regularly since 1983 as managing director, together with the support of the senior occupational therapist, Ingrid Schwarz, as well as other employees, occasionally at the Christmas markets held in the house, he pointed out the specific training to the diaconal nurse to the residents and in particular their relatives present for geriatrics . After three years, the trainees were able to acquire a church college degree. In addition to the general technical training at the Buch Clinic , there were special seminars in pastoral care , the interpretation of the New and Old Testaments , nursing and psychology, which were held independently in the monastery building on Eberswalder Strasse.

Use for elderly and sick people in GDR times

In 1989 Karpinski organized together with the pastor, Pastor Dieter Spree, an exhibition under the motto “On the road together - yesterday, today, tomorrow - life in St. Elisabeth Abbey”. The then State Secretary for Church Affairs in the GDR , Kurt Löffler , visited the Elisabeth-Stift in September 1989 and Karpinski explained to the state official that “the commitment to elderly and sick citizens corresponds to the humanistic consequences of the Christian faith”.

Work after German reunification

After the peaceful revolution and reunification , the director mainly took care of the construction work in the monastery building, which had to be completely cleared for the purpose of modernization in 1994, and the takeover of additional state-sponsored facilities and their further development within the framework of diakonia. Karpinski was also the honorary chairman of the Evangelical Association for Work with the Elderly in Berlin and Brandenburg. In 2001 he retired.

After the peaceful revolution, Dieter Karpinski was not only director of the Elisabethstift but at the same time also managing director of the Evangelical Diakoniewerk Zoar based in Cantianstrasse in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. There he was allowed to “conclude legal transactions with himself or with himself as a representative of third parties” together with another managing director. With effect from September 14, 1998 this authority expired at the same time as the dismissal and appointment of a sole managing director.

The St. Elisabeth monastery now belonged to Stephanus gGmbH and thus to the Diakonie Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia . The then General Superintendent for Berlin, Martin-Michael Passauer , who was also Chairman of the Foundation's Board of Trustees, signed an obituary for Dieter Karpinski . With the unveiling of the memorial plaque on June 16, 2010, a house on the grounds of the Elisabeth Senior Citizens' Center at Pankower Bürgerpark was given a name by the then Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Thierse and the facility manager.

family

Karpinski was married to Jutta Karpinski, née Schirrmacher (* 1942; † 2018). Their common gravestone in the cemetery in Berlin-Kaulsdorf bears the cross and under it refers to John chapter 14, verses 1 to 4.
