history

During the so-called Interregnum (1254–1273) Diether V used the situation as an independent territorial lord to expand his power on the Middle Rhine .

Since the castle in St. Goar in the Rhine Valley was no longer sufficient for him to secure his rule on the left bank of the Rhine, he had Rheinfels Castle built above this town from 1245 onwards. The duty levied on St. Goar was the main source of income for County Katzenelnbogen. After an increase in the tariff, which impaired free trade, the Rhenish League of Cities besieged Rheinfels Castle for a year and 14 weeks in 1255/1256 in order to abolish the tariff, but the ruler of Katzenelnbogen remained the victor, despite the 40 attacks by the besiegers .

In 1258 Diether captured Archbishop Gerhard I of Dhaun from Mainz in the course of a dispute over power on the Middle Rhine , for which the Pope excommunicated him. In 1274 he received absolution for this offense, combined with the requirement of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, which he also carried out.

In 1260, the County of Katzenelnbogen was divided between Diether V and his brother Eberhard I : From then on, Diether V was the seat of the Lower County of Katzenelnbogen and St. Goar with Rheinfels Castle as the residence of the older line, while the Upper County of Darmstadt, Count Eberhard I, the younger line, was awarded. Diether V. also had property in the Upper County. In 1274 Zwingenberg , which was awarded to him, received city rights from King Rudolf von Habsburg . This made Zwingenberg the oldest town on Bergstrasse .

Diether V was followed by his son Wilhelm I as Count von Katzenelnbogen.
