Count Wilhelm I von Katzenelnbogen (* 1270 or 1271 ; † November 18, 1331 ) was Count von Katzenelnbogen from the older line of the family. His father was Diether V. von Katzenelnbogen , his mother Margarete von Jülich († 1292), daughter from the influential noble family of the same name.

Wilhelm ruled from 1276 to 1331. In 1284 he married Irmgard von Isenburg († 1309), daughter of Ludwig I von Isenburg, whose dowry was St. Goarshausen . His second wife was Adelheid von Waldeck († 1329). This connection came from Wilhelm II († 1385), who in 1332 became head of the Katzenelnbogen family of counts of the older line.

In 1301 Wilhelm I allied himself with the four Rhenish electors , who demanded excessive tariffs on the Rhine and thus severely damaged trade. The result was the declaration of war by King Albrecht I and the destruction of Zwingenberg , Wilhelm's property on Bergstrasse . Also Weinheim , Heppenheim and Bensheim were taken.

In 1319, Archbishop Wilhelm of Trier allowed the construction of Reichenberg Castle , which was supposed to secure the connection between the core area of the County of Katzenelnbogen and its possessions on the Rhine . However, it was only partially finished by Wilhelm's death.

In 1330 Wilhelm I received from Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian the right to fortify Darmstadt and to equip it with the same freedoms as the imperial city of Frankfurt am Main . The city rights of Zwingenberg were also reaffirmed.

Before his death, Wilhelm introduced the so-called Majorat in his house, according to which the eldest son became the sole successor. Count Wilhelm I was buried in the family tomb in the Eberbach monastery. The tomb was located in the monastery church in 1612/1614 in front of the Johannes altar and was placed on the wall during later renovations. Fragments of the destroyed red sandstone tombstone are now on display in the Abbey Museum.
