Dietmar Walther

Dietmar Winand Walther (born August 10, 1923 in Dresden ; † January 29, 2017 in Taunusstein ) was a German conductor , composer and accordionist .

Life

Dietmar Walther was born on August 10, 1923 in Dresden . At the age of 11 he led a school orchestra with around 60 members. During this time he also received piano , clarinet and theory lessons at the Dresden Conservatory , and from 1938 he took accordion lessons with Kapellmeister Alfred Olbrich in Dresden. After his military service in the Air Force, he passed the examination as a music teacher and was appointed to the conservatory in Wiesbaden in 1949 , where he became head of the accordion class and also a teacher of music theory and methodology . In 1950 he founded the Wiesbaden Accordion Orchestra . In addition, he worked as a concert and radio soloist until 1968, particularly in the field of virtuoso light music. From 1970 until 1989 he worked as head of music school, on the board and as director of the "Wiesbaden Conservatory and Music Seminar for Musical Vocational Training".

As a conductor, Walther was able to win several international awards and prizes with his Wiesbaden Accordion Orchestra , which took the name Akkordeon Orchester Wiesbaden Dietmar Walther (AOWDW) in his honor . He himself has received various orders of merit and badges from the various associations, but also the letter of honor from the State of Hesse and the Federal Cross of Merit .

Through personal friendships and contacts with composers such as Gerhard Mohr or Curt Mahr , he was able to persuade them to write for the instrument accordion. Pieces like "Heimatbilder", "Drei Temperamente" or "Florentinisches Konzert" etc. come from these collaborations. He himself wrote various compositions of virtuoso light music for the accordion. He has also written several film scores .

Dietmar Walther last lived in Taunusstein , where he died at the age of 93.
