Olaf is a Nordic male given name .

Origin and meaning

Olaf is widespread throughout Scandinavia and northern Germany . It probably comes from the ancient Norse Anulaibaz , which means "descendant of the ancestor". The name can already be found in documents from the Viking Age . The name Leif is closely related .
